About Damn Am 2016

The Damn Am series, founded by Brian Schaefer and Skatepark of Tampa in 2001, was built on the success of Tampa Am, the largest and longest running annual amateur skateboard contest in the world. Created with the idea of taking the Tampa experience on the road, in its 15-year history the Damn Am has become the number one global amateur contest series.

In 2015 the Damn Am partnered with Street League Skateboarding to create the only Amateur qualifying series for both Tampa Am and the Street League Pro Open. The Series provides a path to a career in professional skateboarding by awarding the Damn Am of the Year winner a spot in the SLS Pro Open, where they have the chance to qualify onto the World Tour.

The Damn Am traditionally consists of events in the US and abroad. Past locations include Portugal, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Toronto, Vancouver, New York City and Los Angeles. To date, over 2000 skateboarders worldwide have participated in the Series, including over 150 of today’s professionals including Nyjah Huston, Ishod Wair, and Luan Oliveira to name a few.

Every stop of the Series receives extensive marketing and media coverage. In addition to SPoT Life video features showcased on RIDE Channel, events are recapped daily on SPoT.com and SPoT social media, along with photo and video highlights across the SLS platforms. The Series receives additional marketing support from partners that include TWS, Nike, Santa Cruz, and Independent.

DAMN AM / TAMPA AM QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

The Damn Am is open to skaters who meet our qualifying criteria. This determination is made on a case-by-case basis. The criteria used include results from previous Damn Am and Tampa Am events, the level of support the skater has from endemic skate brands, and also video submissions.

In the 2016 Damn Am Series, skaters who finish in the top 10 at each stop will automatically advance to the Tampa Am Qualifiers while the winners of each stop will advance directly to the Tampa Am Semi-Finals.

The 2016 Damn Am of the Year along with the winner of Tampa Am will be qualified to skate the 2017 Street League Pro Open where they will have the chance to advance onto the SLS World Tour. A skater’s best two Damn Am finishes count toward their Damn Am of the Year ranking.
